Soapbox of recovery terminology
why is it so difficult for people to understand what we mean by "person-first" language? People who are intelligent, and good friends, seem to believe that in order to correct a symptom or a disease, they must 'claim' it first. I would rather say: I have Bi Polar Disorder, than a person who may say: "I am a diabetic". my main form of distinction is my way of saying that a person is NOT their disease. So when some one, for example in the medical field asks me, are you diabetic? I would say no. It is confusing, because in common parlance, I would be not be able to make a distinction between being something and having a disorder that makes life challenging. If I had diabetes, I would have to explain this to medical personnel, because I am not going to say. "I am diabetic." I would say, I HAVE diabetes. This is a pet peeve of mine. so saying goodnight to the soapbox. Good night, All. Starsib
